Who is Your Crush?

After all the down-in-the-dumps stuff of late, I thought I'd ask you all a question to lighten the mood on my blog somewhat. We all have our little fantasies in life, I'm sure, and we all watch someone on the television or perhaps in real life and swoon over them. We are human after all, well, okay, with the odd exception, like an MP for example, but let's not go there... When I wrote Discovery at Rosehill I based the priest on my long-time crush and extremely gorgeous actor, Martin Shaw. I watched my boxset of Apparitions where he played the leading role of a priest - particularly well - on constant playback, while watching him in Judge John Deed is enough to make any hot-blooded female go weak at the knees and I've watched all those episodes over and over again, too. I tried to imagine him playing the part of Steve in Nightingale Woods but to be honest, I have struggled with that image. Steve, although portrayed as a ladies' man, is perhaps a little too down to earth for Mr Shaw and then of course the age differences became a bit of a visual obstacle. I never did find the perfect actor to play the part of Steve though I'm sure he's out there.

So I have a raging crush on Martin Shaw. There, I confess. Hands up, I like the older man, as people who know me personally will have realised by now due to the twenty year age gap between myself and The Farmer. And what I now want to know is a) who is your raging crush - it doesn't have to be a TV star but can be someone you've known for years and those secret feelings have just never touched the surface - b) why, and c) do you, like me, long for the day when, in your next life you will star opposite your raging crush in a TV drama and find all your fantasies come to life?

Now don't be shy, I won't tell anyone.

    1. I don't watch either of those, Hayley! Though I know Home and Away is Australian so I can imagine hunky guys with surf boards...

  2. Colin Firth obviously, Hugh Grant if Colin is busy, Gene Hunt for a one nighter. Ant and Dec but only if they are together. Tom Daley (I assume its not illegal now) simply to feel that washboard. Look, I never pretended I wasn't easy! (Work your way through that set of double negatives.) Yours Kelloggs 'I'm in my prime and going to enjoy it' ville mwah

  3. First of all, Martin Shaw was fab in Apparitions! Just had to say that. :)

OK. My raging crush... who is it? Well, for over two decades now I've had a pretty-much constant crush on Keanu Reeves, my absolute and only inspiration behind the character of Kenny Ross in my books 'No Matter What' and 'Illusions of Love'. I just adore the guy! He's always been a little offbeat, a bit quirky, and so different to all those other Hollywood actors. Not to mention gorgeous!

But, right now, my raging crush is an actor called Jim Caviezel, currently on our screens on Channel 5 in 'Person of Interest'. I have a MAJOR crush on this man, and when I wrote the character of Jim Allen in my latest book 'Striker' this is the man I pictured. He is just so, well, handsome! And he's got the most gorgeous voice! Would I like to star alongside him in my next life in a TV drama and find all my fantasies come to life? You bet I would!!

I'm off for a lie down now... ;)

  4. Only one? But there are so many dishy folks out there! My number 1 is probably Johnny Depp though, I mean that man is just...*swoons* He's funny, he's smart, he's amazingly gorgeous. Oooh or now I'm also thinking of Jensen Ackles. But I think Mr Depp would beat him out, just!
    Oh to be Mrs Depp!

  6. Martin Shaw - I watched him originally in 'The Professionals' many decades ago, and now love him as George Gently. Sadly, not the older man to my age!
Hugh Grant - there is something naughty about him that appeals!
Kevin Whately - the Geordie accent and voice which is growing more gravelly as he gets older, does it for me. And he looks so comfortable to be with.
I like a man with a sense of humour... young men, younger than me, have never appealed... and they must have a nice smell, clean fingernails and hair, and be interesting.
And sometimes you might pass someone, a builder, someone working on the road, whose eyes meet yours briefly, for a nano-second in time, and something, just something, sparks. Blink and it's gone but the memory can stay with you a while, making your tummy tremble and your thoughts turn to... whatever they may turn to when sap rises, Spring is in the air and so on!!!!
And I have a crush on someone in real life... someone I know... but I am saying nothing more.
Great idea for a post CJ, a nice change, a bit of levity. Thanks.

    1. I think Martin Shaw has definitely got better with age, I don't think he was quite as handsome in The Professionals as he was as Judge John Deed. And I also like Kevin Whately, whom I believe has visited my area several times for a holiday.

    2. You mention Robson Green in a later comment... ditto!
What I want to ask is... what happens when the crush is returned, when the person you have a crush on also has a crush on you. And when does a crush become more serious? There is the sinister aspect of stalking of course, but what about when the feelings become more 'real'?

      Delete
    3. Good question! Bit scary to think of the words 'stalker' and 'crush' in the same sentence but I know what you mean. Many celebs have been stalked and I imagine its been quite terrifying.

  7. Comment by Barbara Henderson via Facebook:- It might make you smile to learn that my first ever crush was Bamber Gascoigne! Not a joke! It was the brains, and he had a kind face. So I have stuck with brains-and-kindness as my 'crush' template ever since. Except of course for 'Man' from 'Man v Food' - I really cannot rationalise that one!

    1. Oh yes, Hugh Laurie is another one who's got better with age - I think he's adorable! Not sure about Adam Ant though; always thought he looked a bit daft with all that face paint!

    1. Lovely Robson Green, definitely another favourite of mine. I used to think Richard Gere was gorgeous too, but I saw him recently and I think he's gone a bit like Robert Redford - not too sure anymore.

  10. It would have to be Triple H from WWE (Paul Michael Levesque) There is just something I like about the American Rough Redneck look! Another example of this is Josh Holloway (Sawyer from Lost) as Cally Taylor above said :-)

  12. My crush is David Tennant from Doctor Who. Oh. My. Lord. Why? Because he's totally good looking. I melt at the sight of him, LOL! I would have loved to be his companion...which means that yes, I'm jealous of Rose Tyler. ;)

  13. Kathryn! I had a huge crush on Martin Shaw too, as Inspector George Gently! My other TV ones are US Actors Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad and loads of films), Michael Chiklis (The Shield & loads of films), and I've never been able to get over Sean Bean, especially as Boromir in LOTR... and then there's US actor Ryan Gosling, though I generally like my men the same sort of age as me, which means lots of lines and grey hair - oh, and I'm with you on Benedict Cumberpatch; I think he's one of those men that people are 'told' is the new thinking woman's TV hottie, so everyone suddenly decides they like him!!!

  14. I like my men either really moody and difficult or a bit wild. I love Robert Plant (from Led Zeppelin), Daniel Day Lewis does it for me too. I also really love Emmanuel Adebayour, who is known in this house as my next husband. He has a thick African French accent, and can just sit in his knickers and read me the phone book! lol

  17. Haha this is a good one. I'm gonna be really weird (bear in mind I'm a happily married man) and say my crush/bromance would be for Robb Flynn from Machine Head (see here: http://www.machinehead1.com/board_posts/california-mayhem/photos/2727)

He is an awesome guitarist, vocalist and song writer, plus he is an incredible front-man and all round good guy. Best band in the world :)

  19. Love the eye candy board on Pinterest idea!
Totally with you on Martin Shaw.
For me the single most important factor is the twinkle in the eye - it says he's a bit mischievous, that he doesn't take life or himself too seriously, that a romp with him would be fun.
The twinkliest of them all for me is David Essex - I know he's all white-haired now but as a rogueish young gypsy he was irresistible and that twinkle is still there.
Hugh Jackman has it in barrowloads - George Clooney used to have it but I'm not so sure now - and although Pierce Brosnan should really be too smooth for my tastes - he makes my knees buckle, especially that bit in Mamma Mia where Meryl Streep rips the shirt off him in the cascading water. Oh be still my beating heart!

I used to like Pierce Brosnan but went off him and I've never seen the attraction in George Clooney!

  20. Oh and PS - forgot to mention that I actually met David Essex many moons ago - I was a young journalist and supposed to be interviewing him. But when he looked at me with those twinkly eyes - and then shook my hand - I actually (literally!) forgot my own name! Lovely memory though...
